This was environment encountered by the first Spanish explorers who came to the north from Mexico, established routes to Northern California and built the California Missions, many of which still remain. One of these trails is the Anza Trail which passes in a northwesterly direction from San Jacinto through what was once Edgemont (now part of Moreno Valley) to Alta, California.

Father Pedro Font was a member of Captain Anza's second expedition. Font left a diary describing the beauty of the land now known as Riverside County, with its beautiful San Jacinto River, fertile earth, grasses and cottonwoods.
